English
At Hook Infant School, our goal is to deliver a high quality and engaging English curriculum that develops a love for reading, writing and speaking and listening. Through the teaching of English, we are equipping children with key life skills enabling them to communicate effectively in a range of both spoken and written forms across all subjects and contexts. We centre our English curriculum with reading at the heart of it. The use of high-quality text drivers and first-hand experiences mean the children are immersed in a vocabulary rich learning environment, which ensures the curriculum expectations are met. Using a well-planned sequence of English lessons, children are supported to become independent writers, guiding them to draw on their knowledge of phonics, grammar and reading. Lessons are planned using the Hampshire Learning Journey model where the children are given ample opportunities to acquire new skills in their writing and produce outcomes for a range of audiences and purposes.
We believe reading is the gateway to learning, giving our children the skills to effectively communicate their ideas and emotions, as well as becoming successful learners. At Hook we promote a whole school reading culture where children have access to high quality books and literature throughout the day.
Your child's reading experience is much more than decoding and word reading. There are a whole range of skills and strategies your child will need to develop to enable them to become fluent, successful readers. We aim to help all children develop each aspect of their reading through a range of individual and guided reading lessons, in addition to reading activities and comprehension exercises.
Below there are two videos which show the elements of reading beyond the word reading aspect and may introduce you to additional strategies you could use to support your child's reading at home.
Early reading and writing begins with the teaching of phonics. We use Anima Phonics for all of our phonics teaching, please look at the phonics page under the curriculum tab for more information on this.
